Physical Education (PE)

Through PE, children learn a range of physical, thinking, social and emotional skills that enable them to develop a life-long healthy lifestyle and positive well-being, to enable them to tackle the challenges of everyday life.

A high-quality physical education curriculum, supported by the scheme, ‘Beyond the Physical’ inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in sport and other physically demanding activities. As well as opportunities to participate and compete in sport against other schools in the area, ‘Beyond the Physical’ supports the children with building character and helps to embed values such as fairness and respect.

To ensure that all pupils develop physical skills:

  • PE is taught weekly
  • all strands of PE are taught in every year group (dance, gymnastics, games and athletics)
  • children participate in a wide range of sporting events within the Colne Valley against other schools, including, cross country running, netball, hockey, football, athletics, boccia, handball and basketball.
  • children develop the knowledge and understanding of the positive impact that engaging in such activity has on health and personal development.
  • by the end of KS2, students strive to achieve the expected standard of; 25m distance swim, using a range of strokes effectively and performing safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
  • children in Years 4 and 5 take part in Bikeability which is the government’s national cycle training programme. It helps children learn practical skills and understand how to cycle on today’s roads
  • children in EYFS and year 1 take part in the Balanceability programme, specially designed with child development experts and cycling professionals so that all children have the opportunity to learn to ride a bike.
