In art lessons, children explored lines and line patterns:
Class 1
Reception:
- Observed lines in their environment and experimented with wool, skipping ropes, and string.
- Practised drawing varied lines and identified line patterns in nature (e.g., rain, grass, waves).
- Used different drawing media (pens, crayons, pastels, chalks, charcoal) to represent patterns.
- Studied Kandinsky’s concentric circles, linking the artwork to natural patterns.
- They created their own concentric designs, focusing on spacing and avoiding overlap.
Year 1:
- Studied Indian fabrics, discussing embroidered line patterns and mirror details.
- Created designs inspired by Indian embroidery, incorporating bead shapes and using varied media.
- Focused on filling the space while avoiding overlap of lines and patterns.
The activity emphasized creative exploration, observation, and the use of diverse media to interpret and represent line patterns.
Developing writing skills in Class 1
Reception children have been developing their drawing and labelling skills, focusing on using initial letters to label their pictures. They are also practising name writing and improving letter formation through various activities.
Year One students have been learning about sentence writing. They practised orally rehearsing sentences to improve their writing, focusing on spacing between words, starting sentences with capital letters, and ending with full stops. They also worked on forming both uppercase and lowercase letters. While challenging, their enthusiasm and determination to master this skill have been impressive.
Design Technology
We have been collaboratively working in mixed age groups to share ideas, plan and make a model of something in our Design Technology work. Children have been encouraged to really listen to the ideas of peers, take turns, share and work as a team to create a finished product.
When planning, they have been encouraged to consider materials in our box modelling area and also, the best ways to join different parts and materials. As the construction has taken place, children have used their plans but have also begun to understand the need to evaluate and adapt their ideas as they go along. They have begun to recognise when a way of joining they had wanted to use may not be the best one or that a different material would work better for a specific part.
